Questions for the Draft

The new NFL logo went into use at the 2008 draft.

The Draft is coming up, hopefully, and on NFL Network, they were talking about how the NFL has really become a passing league. I can agree with that. And then they were talking about wether or not you should pick up a running back in the first round of the draft because of that.

I don’t think you should take a running back in the first round, but I do think that you should take one (if you don’t have a very good one) maybe in the 3rd to 5th round. Running backs are still very important in the NFL. Just because it is becoming a passing league doesn’t mean that you should pick up a running back in the last round. If you did not have a good running game, then you would not be able to pass the ball very well.

Say, for example, a team has a running back that should be a 3 string running back. Then, all teams are going to do is defend the pass. They know that your running game is not going to get very far even if they do back their line backers up a little. Then, you have lost the run and the pass. But then, you go up against a team that has a pretty good passing game and an average running game. Well, then they are going to have to be a little more careful. Then, you go up against a team that has a great running game, and all of the suddon, you are always looking for the run. But, then they start throwing 50 yard passes, and because your playing the run, it’s a TD!

But, I will say this, a running back is not the only thing that will make a team have a great running game. You have to have a good line to protect the running back, and the QB for that matter.

Well, that’s all I have to say. See ya!

  1. It depends on the talent coming out in the draft. I actually think a running back in the first round is a good idea. With the exception of LaDanian Tomlinson, most running backs deteriorate quickly.

    • Well, the thing is… another example is the Steelers. They really need to improve their offensive line and their DBs. Now, pretend they don’t have a running game. I still think that taking a DB or line man is still better. Because…

      1. Defensive Backs defend against the pass mostly. And this is becoming a PASSING league.
      2. Line men are a BIG part in the PASSING game for all teams.

So, I would take a running back later in the draft so that you can be confident in both subjects. Because you don’t NEED the best running back ever for an AMAZING passing game. You just need a threat.
