Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That is depressing. We will never, EVER, be anything close to what God is. God is perfect, holy, righteous, pure, he is LOVE. And what are we? Sinful. Miserable. Unholy. Ephesians 2 talks about how we are dead in our transgressions. We are dead! Death is constant fear for humans. Some may not know what lies on the other side of death and are lost in this life. But Ephesians 2 comes back and says, “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.” God loves us even though we fall short of the glory of God. And we can be called righteous because of Christ’s sacrifice for us! How awesome is that?!
Even with this wonderful life that we have in Christ, we still had nothing to do with it! We couldn’t have done a single little act of love, kindness, or sacrifice to defeat the power of sin. Only Jesus could do that. Which is what Paul says in the next three verses: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Everything is for the Glory of God, because, well… just look at everything he has done for us!
